Reflective Narrative
JAPN 395 was an online pilot course that satisfied the MLO 1 requirements. We would meet once a week to go over the online modules, troubleshoot any problems we may have had , and participate in small group activities. There were four modules in the class, each one with a specific theme. For example, our first module was all about Japanese geography so we focused mainly about the location of Japan, surrounding countries and bodies of water. This class made me realize the importance of learning about Japanese geography and culture in Japanese. Previously I had only learned about Japanese culture in English, and this class provided me with valuable new grammar tools and vocabulary to use. The group discussions were a perfect way to use the grammar and vocabulary I had just learned in a practical setting, while also receiving useful feedback in the process.
This class also helped me improve my research and technology skills. On more than one occasion we were required to do research and present it to the rest of the class. One assignment required us to research an earthquake of our choice. This allowed me to use Google Slides, which I had never used before, and create a presentation with my partner. It also let me experience a certain amount of group research which I have never really done before taking this course. This class was able to offer me a little bit of everything and I walked away learning much more than what is in the course description.
